History

Introduction:

Baptist Tabernacle in Shreveport, LA, has a rich history spanning over several decades, marked by growth, community impact, and steadfast faith.

1. Founding Years (1956-1960s):

Establishment: Baptist Tabernacle was founded in 1956 by Dr. J.G. Tharpe with a vision to the community and the world for Christ. Early Growth: Initially meeting at 3031 Hollywood Avenue in Shreveport the church quickly grew in membership and influence within the local community. Key Leaders: Dr. Tharpe, after a lengthy pastorate was followed by Mike Landry, Jon Isbell, Randy Moore and the current pastor, Jack Alumbaugh.

2. Expansion and Development (1970s-1990s):

Facility Expansion: Numerous buildings were added to the facility on Hollywood to accommodate new ministries. Ministry Growth: In 1964 the Baptist Christian Academy was incorporated. Baptist Christian College began in 1961 and was located originally on the Hollywood campus. In 1973 it was renamed Baptist Christian University. In 1987 it became known as Louisiana Baptist University. Community Impact: The church began Baptist Christian Children’s home in 1980 and Baptist Christian Recreational Recovery Center in 1987.

3. Recent History (2000s-Present):

Major Relocation: The church purchased 35 acres of land just off the Inner Loop in Shreveport and sold the Hollywood property to Zion Baptist Church. This new location provided greater visibility and opportunity for growth. A new facility was built and is the current home of the congregation. Mission and Vision: The church has a vibrant mission’s program, is actively engaged in reaching the lost through the Awana ministry, a robust Bible distribution ministry and dynamic preaching of the gospel.

4. Notable Events and Milestones:

Anniversaries: Dr. Tharpe celebrated his 25th anniversary with the church in 1981 and his 30th in 1986. The church celebrated her 60th anniversary in 2016. Louisiana Baptist University celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023.
